Origins of E-Commerce

1969 — CompuServe is founded as the immediate leader in building online services such as e-mail and online live chat services. CompuServe was later acquired by AOL in 1998.(Max, 2021)

1979 — Michael Aldrich invents online shopping. This is e-commerce in its first form. He creates a system that processes transactions between consumers and businesses or business-to-business. He modifies a television and connects it to a computer for transaction processing using a telephone line. This process however was not fully realized until the introduction of the internet in the 1990s when people could take advantage of online sales. (Max, 2021)

1982 - Boston Computer Exchange launches its first e-commerce business and sells used computers online. (Max, 2021)

1989 - Tim Berners-Lee invents the first web server and by the end of 1990. The web server was up and running at CERN, Berners-Lee's employer at the time. At the time, he began working with other computer scientists to help develop the server that would become the worldwide web. (Max, 2021)

The early 90s and the introduction of the Internet

1993 — The source code of the first web browser, invented by Berners-Lee, is released to the public. This grants public access to the world wide web for the first time.

1995 - The National Science Foundation lifts its restriction on commercial use of the NET. This gives users the necessary rights to start an online business and allows online shopping to take shape, leading to the launch of many well-known e-commerce platforms that are still thriving today.

1995 - eBay, one of the first and most popular e-commerce sites for selling products, is introduced. Also, Jeff Bezos launches a small online bookstore now known as Amazon. By the end of 1996, it saw revenues of $15.7 million.

1998 - PayPal creates a payment processing system for e-commerce and is now one of the largest and most trusted online payment platforms in the e-commerce industry.(Max, 2021)

The early 2000s and the dawn of e-commerce

2000 — Google introduces Google AdWords offers a "one-stop shop" to both online and physical businesses looking for simple online advertising solutions.

2005 — Etsy is launched and is now one of the most popular third-party online marketplace platforms to make it easy for anyone to start selling online.

2006 — Shopify launches its storefront software which was created out of frustration with previous storefront systems that were too complicated and expensive. Shopify has helped bring simple software for small business owners to start an eCommerce business. (Max, 2021)

2009 - Ecwid introduces a revolutionary way to start an e-commerce business. Ecwid started out as a few lines of code that you could include on your website to create an online store. It was a new hands-on approach that allowed online businesses to create a storefront without constant monitoring by the eCommerce platform. (Max, 2021)

The modern online shop

2011 — Facebook launches Sponsored Stories as a form of upfront advertising.

2014 — Apple brings Apple Pay to their iPhone. Apple Pay is by far one of the most popular mobile payment systems in use today. The introduction of wallet and Apple Pay has made it even easier for consumers to purchase items using their iPhones.

2016 — Instagram begins testing in-app shopping features. Instagram's parent company Facebook also introduced the Facebook Marketplace and added a payment feature in the Messenger app.

2017 - The e-commerce market rises to new heights. Cyber Monday sales hit a new record topping $6.5 billion in online sales revenue, a 17% increase from 2016.

2020 - E-commerce grows exponentially due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Lockdowns are forcing physical stores to adapt to the digital world and provide more goods and services online. (Max, 2021)

World wide Web (WWW)

What is the World Wide Web (WWW, W3)?

The World Wide Web, also known as the Web, WWW, or W3, refers to all public websites or pages that users can access on their local computers and other devices via the Internet. These pages and documents are interconnected via hyperlinks that users click to get information. This information can be in various formats, including text, images, audio, and video The term World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet. Rather, the World Wide Web is part of the Internet. (Awati, 2023)

History of the World Wide Web

British physicist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Together with colleagues from CERN in Geneva, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Berners-Lee has been working on the concept since 1989. Their goal was to combine available technologies and data networks to create an easy-to-use system for global communication. and information sharing. At that time, they started working on the first WWW server, which they called httpd. They also dubbed the first WWW client. Originally, WWW was a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) hypertext browser/editor that ran in the NextStep environment. In 1990, Berners-Lee demonstrated the first web server and browser at CERN to explain his idea of a World Wide Web. The web then entered the public eye in 1991 when Berners-Lee, who also developed the hypertext, announced its creation on the alt. hypertext newsgroup; at the same time, he created the world's first web page with the address (ex http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html. ) (Awati, 2023)
